General Info
Politics is not just about politicians and governments, although studying politics obviously involves understanding how governments come into being and implement policies.
Politics is about the exercise of power and authority and as such involves considering all social relations where power is exercised. These include relations between men and women, adults and children, different ethnic groups and different social classes.
Identity Politics
Identity politics refers to the social and political relations that focus on aspects of self identity. This generally results from one group being marginalised as a political minority (which does not necessarily mean the group is a numerical minority), with their identity, interests, beliefs, lifestyle and culture related to their self identity being undermined by the political majority.
